The ‘Music For Mass’ EP is quite a departure for Matt Wilier, as it features no piano. Instead, it’s the textures of strings and church organ that have taken over his thoughts. Even though it’s not exactly a requiem, Matt has crafted atmospheres that invite reflection, introspection, and perhaps even elevation—like the final track of a progression of laments, moving from descent to silence. Lament gives prominence to cellos, while the other tracks tend to reach toward the higher registers. And then there are the organic basses that ground their progression.
These are images that emerge while listening, as is often the case with Matt’s music.
